Alumni #30

I kept the promise
of the pear

& I remembered
every word I said

in front of that stack
of knives we laid in front

of the foreign eyes
of the visitor’s dorm.

I said I would be
a paper storm

& that my lightning
would start fires.

I did not know
that most of them

would burn
the things I love.

When I see a pear now
I buy a pear.

That is how you’re
supposed to treat fruit,

but I was trying to impress
that Russian girl.
