An Interview with Avrina Joslin, "A Different Sky"

What inspired this piece?

My mother’s grandparents lived in a village called Kanjikuli in Tamil Nadu, India. I’ve visited this house a few times. A lovely pond sprawls in front of it. The little I know about the people there, their ways of living is by listening to my mother’s stories about them. It seemed quite idyllic, almost paradise like, a paradise I believed existed because I had caught a glimpse of it. Writing about it has become my way of visiting and revisiting this place.

Which writer or body of work has influenced your style/craft?

Kiran Desai’s Inheritance of Loss definitely had been an influence on my writing. I have admired her ability to create a landscape of metaphors which not only adds to every character but also is brilliant to read.
